Site Investigation Newcastle

From our office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre (T:0191 4022521), The Land Consultancy Limited is well positioned to provide geotechnical and environmental (contaminated land) site investigtion and consultancy services to the north-east of England. Works have been completed in the following areas:

  • Newcastle-upon-Tyne
  • Durham
  • Darlington
  • Sunderland
  • Middlesbrough
  • Berwick-upon-Tweed
  • Hexham
  • Alnwick
  • Consett

Examples of two recently completed projects are given below.

Phase 1 Desk Study – Newcastle-upon-Tyne

The Land Consultancy Limited was recently commissioned to complete a geo-environmental desk study for a former iron foundry site (approx. 1.2Ha) located on the outskirts of Newcastle. The site is intended to be developed out with residential housing.

The desk study involved the review of historical maps and commercially available environmental database information. Geological maps were studied and a Coal Authority mining report was obtained as subcropping coal seams were present in the locality. A stream was located close to the site and the property was located on a Minor Aquifer. A site walkover survey of the site was also undertaken to enable the consultant completing the report to become familiar with the site and its surroundings, and to determine whether any potential areas of concern not apparent from the desk based information (e.g. tanks, service runs, areas of vegetation die back, invasive plants – e.g. Japanese Knotweed) were present on the site.

A preliminary conceptual model/risk assessment was completed for the site. Significant shallow mining, ground gas, geotechnical and contamination risks were identified and a appropriate level of targeted and non targeted ground investigation works was scoped to investigate the significant risks identified. Following completion of the site works, The Land Consultancy Limited will be able to provide appropriate advice with repsect to: foundations, floorslabs and buried concrete design; whether the remediation of contaminated soil/groundwater is necessary; whether the drilling and grouting up of shallow mine workings is necessary to safeguard future development from the effects of shallow mining related ground subsidence; and, whether gas protection measures need to be installed into the proposed houses.

Wind Farm Ground / Site Investigation Anwick

The Land Consultancy Limited was commissioned by RWE Npower Renewables Ltd to undertake geotechnical investigations prior to the construction of Middlemoor Wind Farm (18no. turbine site).

The works were to inform on foundation design for the turbines, meteorogical masts and substation compound; and for proposed track design purposes.

The works undertaken involved rotary core drilling, open hole rotary drilling (to check for shallow mining related voids), geophysics surveys, topographic surveying, trial pitting and in-situ CBR testing. Ground gas monitoring was also undertaken on installed rotary drill holes.
