Site: Proposed Small Wind Turbine, Edgebaston, Birmingham
A Phase 1 desk study was intially undertaken for this site. This indicated: that the potential for contamination to be present was low; thin Glacial Till deposits were likely to overlie sandstone; and, the risk to the development from shallow mining was negligible.
Site investigation works were undertaken which involved the formation of a cable tool percussion borehole to 5m depth with follow on rotary coring to 10m. Standard in-situ geotechnical testing was undertaken and samples were obtained for geotechnical testing. Several samples were also obtained for contamination testing. The hole was installed for groundwater level monitoring purposes.
From the investigation works undertaken, foundation advice was given as well as a specification for the design of the buried concrete. No elevated contamination levels were present within the samples analysed.
